THRISSUR - MY HOMETOWN : PART -1

This is my first major post in my blogs. Hope this will be a great success. Here, I am writing about my hometown - Thrissur. It was just a while ago that I planned to write about my hometown. So, let's start.

Thrissur, popularly referred to as the Cultural Capital of Kerala, is a major city located in the central part of the state. It is one among the six municipal corporations in Kerala, along with Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Kozhikode and Kannur. It is also the headquarters of Thrissur district, which spans over 3,022 sq.km in area. It is the fourth-largest city by both area and population in Kerala; and the 12th largest city in India by area and 20th largest by population. It is located around 300 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, the executive & legislative capital of Kerala, and 80 km north of Kochi, the economic & judicial capital. It is also the venue of the famous Thrissur Pooram, the most popular temple festival in Kerala, which is popularly known as 'Poorangalude Pooram' (Meaning the pooram of poorams).

The whole city is spanned around the famous Shri Vadakkumnathan Temple, one among the most important Shiva Temples in Kerala. The most important attraction in the city is the mighty Swaraj Round, which circumbulates around this temple and the associated ground, called 'Thekkinkadu Maithanam', spanning around 3 km. No person coming here passes through the city without at least partly circumbulating the mighty temple. The city is also famous as the spot of the tallest church in Asia - The Basilica of Our Mother of Dolours - popularly called as 'Puthan Palli' (New Church) by the natives. Along with this, there are numerous other temples and churches here. Like most of Kerala, the natives here are not that much involved in religious conflicts, and celebrate all festivals jointly with all pomp. There are numerous other temples and churches in this city, like the famous Paramekkavu Bhagavathi Temple, Thiruvambadi Krishna Temple, Ashokeshwaram Shiva Temple, Mithunappally Shiva Temple, The Church of the Our Lady of Dolours, etc. The world-famous Krishna Temple in Guruvayur is located around 28 km away from the city towards the north-west side, and the famous Rama Temple in Thriprayar is located around 24 km away towards south-west.
